few reasons why garage door sensors not working

Obstructed Signal Transmission

Your garage door sensor has two photo eyes, which are located a few centimeters above the ground. One is the sending eye, which has an amber-colored LED light that should always be turned on. The second is the receiving eye, which comes with a green LED light. If something blocks either of these or if both eyes aren’t visible, your garage door won’t work. That’s why you need to do a comprehensive sweep of your home and remove any of the items that block their line of vision.

Dirty Sensor

The sensor of your garage door is delicate and needs to be properly cleaned once in a while. Dust, metal and water can obstruct the sensors signals and decrease its accuracy. If you have an open garage door, then there are more chances that these elements will gather on the sensor.

Sunlight

You may find that your garage door sensor doesn’t work at certain times of the day. This can be a real problem if your garage is located in an area where the sun shines directly on it. The sun’s rays can make your garage door sensor ‘think’ that it’s physically blocked by something, even though it’s not.

Sensor Eye Misalignment

If your sensors are misaligned and don’t point in the right direction, you may have to recalibrate them. Check whether they are slanted or pointed inwards/outwards – if they are, it might be because of something hitting them and changing their position. Next, inspect the green LED light on the receiving eye – if it keeps on flickering (or turns off completely) then there may be an issue with the sensor eyes alignment.

Bad Photo Eye

If the photo eye is not working, then it means that either it has a problem or something else is causing interference in the system. To check for this, take a look at the sending eye’s amber light. If it is flickering instead of being solid, then it means this sensor has a problem. Should this be the case, replacing the component is the only way to go.

Damaged Photo Eye Wiring

The wiring of your photo eye is what provides it with the electricity it needs to function. If the wiring is damaged, the sensor won’t work. As such, you need to be on the lookout for these signs: Frayed or corroded wires, Bite marks, Loose connections, Cracked, pinched or pierced wire insulation and more.

Wear And Tear

Unfortunately, like any other machinery, your garage door is not immune from wear and tear. And since most people use it 3-5 times a day, it can eventually present signs of wear. If your garage door sensors have reached the end of their intended lifespan, there’s nothing to do but to install new ones.

Busted Electrical Components

The parts of your garage door system that could be busted include the sensors, trolley and springs. The most common reason for this is a blown fuse. When too much current passes through the fuse (such as the case of a lightning strike), the current melts (or blows) the sensor. This ends up frying the electric circuit, which is another bigger problem.’

No Power From The Outlet

Many times, when you’re having trouble with your system, the first thing to try is to unplug it and wait a minute before plugging it in again. The lack of electricity can be caused by tripped breakers/GFCI, issues with the wiring/plug, or a lightning storm that caused an electric surge.

Remote Control Issues

If you’ve checked for the above-mentioned reasons and your sensor is still not working, then your remote control may be to blame. You can confirm this by opening/closing the garage door through the wall switch. If this works, then your remote control may just need a battery replacement. But if you’re fairly certain that the battery is new, then make sure to refer to the operating instructions. Two common battery types are seen in garage door remotes: CR2016 and CR2032. They look and ‘feel’ alike, so there’s a chance that you might have put the wrong one.
